Yahoo! India has just announced the launch of MoviePlex, a premium video destination for people to enjoy full-length Bollywood movies for free on the internet. Yahoo! will collaborate with leading movie production houses in India to bring high quality local movies directly to the computer screens of viewers, eliminating the possibilities of piracy. MoviePlex will compete with the YouTube Box Office channel launched a couple of months ago on a similar model.
Arun Tadanki, Managing Director, Yahoo! India says, "Over 30 million Internet users consume 1.7 billion videos every month across India. With the increasing demand for online video, both consumers and content providers are looking for a trusted destination where quality content can be consumed in a piracy-free environment at their leisure. MoviePlex is an example of how Yahoo! connects people to what matters to them the most and Indian movie lovers now have the best full-length movies available to them at their convenience".
Aakrosh, Rann, Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji, Rakht Charitra,Rock on,Rann and a few more movies can be watched on MoviePlex at the moment, while more will be added soon. LG Electronics is a key advertiser on MoviePlex, as is evident from its ads at the bottom of the screen while watching any movie. MoviePlex has the facility to share content over social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to help popularise this online movie channel.
There is no doubt that this is going to be very popular with Indians as was the case with its rival, YouTube Box Office. It remains to be seen who gains the upper hand, although we don't really see a problem with them coexisting because both these channels currently offer premium content for free.
