Aakash commercial version coming in December for 3K; followed by an LTE model?

Datawind is all set to launch the commercial version of its Aakash tablet as Ubislate in December in partnership with various telecom operators. This version of the tablet will come with GPRS connectivity unlike the student version which is limited to Wi-Fi connectivity.

Company is looking to price the tablet at INR2,999. According to Datawind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli, his company has already received pre-bookings from individuals for 108,000 tablets, and it hopes to sell more than 100,000 units through telecom operators.

In other news, Datawind is also in the initial phase of discussions with Reliance Communication to release an LTE version of Ubislate to correspond telco’s 4G roll-out next year.

“We have had preliminary talks with Reliance Industries. It is possible to embed a TD-LTE (long-term evolution) chipset in the tablet for 4G coverage. To begin, this December we’ll launch a GPRS-enabled tablet at an MRP of Rs 2,999 with some Indian operators. Once 4G services are launched, we’ll have a product in that space too.”
