Vodafone will discontinue prepaid phone numbers that are inactive for 60 days at a stretch, reports The Economic Times. This decision comes to the fore after the telecom department’s plan to follow stringent criteria for allocation of phone numbers depending upon active subscribers.
The telecom ministry decided on the new stringent criterion of allocating phone numbers, owing to the shortage of phone numbers. Vodafone will not have to generate new SIMs as the existing subscribers not adhering to the active SIM criteria will get their services discontinued and the number will then be allocated to its new subscribers. This could also affect those with multiple SIMs who use their second/third SIM only as and when required. Vodafone will inform its present subscribers through calls and SMSes while new subscribers will get the usage information in their starter kits.
