Nike has put forth a hi-tech wristband that keeps a tab on how active you are throughout the day. Athletes and fitness freaks can go ahead and share this information online. The Nike+ Fuel Band measures activities through a new metric called NikeFuel. You earn NikeFuel depending upon how active you are.
The wristband features an ergonomic design allowing it to be worn throughout the day. Using accelerometry, it offers information about the various activities via the movement of your wrist. An LED dot matrix display is used to show the four metrics - Time, Calories, Steps and NikeFuel.
Mark Parker, Nike’s President & CEO unveiled the Nike+ FuelBand at an event in New York, also attended by Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong, Oklahoma City scoring champion, Kevin Durant and 2011 IAAF women’s 100-meter World Champion, Carmelita Jeter. “The Nike+ FuelBand is a way for Nike to further evolve the exciting possibilities of merging the physical and digital worlds,” said Parker.
NikeFuel is a normalized score giving equal points to the same activity, unlike calorie counts that are based on a person’s gender and body type. Users can set their daily activity goal, and the series of 20 LED lights turn red-to-green depending upon how close one gets to achieving the goal. The FuelBand syncs with the Nike+ website (with the built-in USB) and also wirelessly (using Bluetooth) to a free iPhone app.
The Nike+ Fuelband can be preordered through Nikestore.com for a suggested retail price of $149 (approx Rs. 7,496).
