Caterpillar unveils construction-grade CAT B10 Android Smartphone.

If you’ve ever worked a construction job, you know exactly how unfriendly the environment can be for a smartphone. There are phone destroying dangers waiting around nearly every corner you turn. While today’s smartphones definitely look nice, there are very few that are suitable for this type of work environment.

This is where Caterpillar comes into play — yes, the same CAT you see on bulldozers and other machinery at construction sites a’plenty. The construction guru’s have been hard at work to develop a phone that can provide the needed functionality of modern smartphones, with the toughness and durability it takes to survive a rough day at work.

Say hello to the CAT B10, a 3.2-inch display device with a protective rubber covering and a single-core 800MHz Qualcomm processor. The device also has a 5-megapixel camera and a front-facing webcam, though no exact megapixel information was provided. Furthermore, the device is said to come running Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread), but should get updated to Ice Cream Sandwich “at some point.” No specifics were given regarding said update. As for availability, look for the CAT B10 to hit store shelves worldwide sometime in May, with European pricing set at €379 (around $500) off-contract.

Construction workers, what do you think? Is the CAT B10 a device you’d like to see in your work truck in the near future?
