Samsung Galaxy Note 2 may launch in September, could steal iPhone 5’s spotlight

Samsung only recently announced the Galaxy S III, and now the entire world is waiting in anticipation to see if their competitors can do one better. The only other brand, which can possibly garner such attention surrounding a smartphone announcement is Apple with their next iPhone, the iPhone 5. Those thinking that Samsung has shown its ace with the Galaxy S III as Apple's biggest competition are surely be mistaken as a recent report suggests that Samsung is preparing another device to duke it out with the iPhone 5, which is the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

This is not the first time that we have heard about the second generation Galaxy Note and as reported earlier, this handset is expected to feature a larger display as compared to last year’s Galaxy Note. The next generation Galaxy Note is expected to feature the Pen-tile matrix display instead of the RGB variant used in the S II. Apart from the screen size, the design is said to be heavily inspired from the Galaxy S III, so we can expect a similar form factor with heavily rounded edges and a pebble-like design. If the Note 2 is indeed modeled around the S III, then there is a good chance that the phone will get some or all of the ‘S’ features like S Beam, Smart Stay eye tracking, Smart Voice, etc.

There are not many more details on the handset, but users should expect an improved 8MP BSI sensor, one of the new Exynos SoCs (dual or quad is unknown, as of now) and of course Ice Cream Sandwich. With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean already announced, one cannot rule out the possibility of this operating system being featured on the Galaxy Note 2.

Moving back to the display of the Galaxy Note 2, rumours suggest that the 5.5-inch display could feature a pixel density of 360ppi. Rumours also suggest that this year’s Galaxy Note will feature a faster CPU and more memory and is expected to be a major step up from the current model.

Here’s what we expect the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to feature:

  • 5.5-inch Super AMOELD touchscreen with a 1680 × 1050
  • 4G LTE, EDGE, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC
  • GPS possibly with GLNONASS and a-GPS support
  • Bluetooth possible v4.0 with USB and hopefully USB-on-the-go
  • 8/12 megapixel AF/Touchfocus camera with full HD video recording and playback
  • A front facing camera for video calls and chats
  • Possibly a 64GB edition, along with 16GB and 32GB versions all with expandable support
  • MHL for AV out

If Samsung does intend to launch the Galaxy Note 2 by September, then it would coincide with the launch of the iPhone 5. The next generation iPhone is expected to have a range of features, most notable of which is a redesigned casing in comparison to the present generation iPhone 4S.

The 2011 edition of the Galaxy Note was a major success despite the fact that it had a different form factor in comparison to most other smartphones available in the market and it has sold over 7 million units till date.
