The Centre had set a limit of five group SMS/MMS per SIM per day to curb speculative messages fuelling unrest in the country.
Following uproar over per day SMS limit, the Centre has now revised the limit to 20 instead of five.
The government of India had taken a strong step to set a limit to up to five group SMSes per day per SIM last week. The ban was implemented to start from August 17 for 15 days. This was due to the speculative messages being sent around about the unrest targeting the people originating from North East in Bangalore. However, it had created inconvenience amongst consumers.
Today the Ministry of Communications and Technology has issued a new notification that states, "It has been decided to revise the permissible limit of bulk SMS/MMS to 20 in place of five with immediate effect. The other conditions will remain the same."
This new revised limit of 20 SMS/MMS per day per SIM is applicable from today onwards and the Indian consumers might feel bit relaxed with that.
However, this is a great opportunity to try out the SMS alternative services based on mobile data connection such as Instant Messengers. The RIM BlackBerry owners do not have to worry much since they are already sorted with the BlackBerry Messenger. Rest of the users can check out services like Whatsapp, Viber, Kik Messenger and many others.
