Apple sends out media invites for September 12 event

After months of rumours and speculations, the day the next iPhone may be released is almost upon us as Apple has sent out media invites for an event slated to take place on the 12th of September 2012 in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater.

This by far is one of the biggest stories of the day in the tech hemisphere as the next iPhone is one of the most awaited handsets of 2012. Apple also plays a part in adding to the hype, as in typical Apple fashion, it does not divulge any information about the forthcoming product but merely adds a caption which states ‘It’s almost here.’ Below this caption, the date of the event is displayed in bold and below it, a shadow of the number 5 is shown. This could only spell one thing – the iPhone 5.

Numerous reports in the past about the tentative release date of the next generation iPhone claimed that it will be unveiled by October. Those reports made sense as Apple does tend to give a handset a shelf life of a year. However, a single report stood out, as a post by iMore had pointed at September 12 as the date the iPhone 5 would be announced. It appears that the website’s sources were spot on and Apple will indeed be announcing the iPhone on this very date.

A report by AllThingsD had also backed these rumours by claiming that the iPhone 5 would be unveiled by early September. It stated that the brand is in the process of stocking up components for a launch that is scheduled to take place in the same time frame. As per the report, the author John Paczkowski states, “Sources tell AllThingsD that Apple is currently planning an event for the week of September 9th, with Wednesday being the date on which it will likely be held. And while we haven’t yet confirmed the event’s focus, history suggests it will indeed be the new iPhone.”

Two rumours of the iPhone 5 seem to be consistent for quite a while now. One is that the iPhone 5 will have a redesigned casing with a larger display, and the other is that it will feature a micro dock. The next iPhone is expected to feature a major design overhaul and is said to be much bigger, measuring 58.47 mm wide, 123.83 mm high and 7.6 mm thin with a 4-inch display. As previous reports have indicated, the headphone jack will also be relocated from the top of the iPhone to its bottom. Earlier reports also indicated that the size of the dock has been reduced drastically and is now the size of a microUSB. The screen size of the iPhone has remained the same since it was first launched. Apple is expected to increase the size of the display to 4-inches diagonally. While the width will remain the same the brand will raise the height, thereby giving it a resolution of 1136 x 640.

So come September, we can certainly expect to see the next generation iPhone being unveiled in all its glory.
