When Apple raises the curtain on the next iPhone, a major change that can be expected to be found is the new SIM tray. This SIM tray is smaller than that of the micro-SIM tray used on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. With the iPhone 5, Apple is expected to use a new form of SIM cards called nano-SIM, which is significantly smaller than the micro-SIM cards currently available in the market. As per a post on 9to5Mac, iFun has recently posted an image of what this new SIM card will look like.
As per the report by 9to5Mac, iFun got its hands on a new T-Mobile nano-SIM that has started to arrive at the German carrier. Along with the new SIM cards, a message also was sent stating that these SIM cards are for a smartphone that will land in the market soon and that they are not to be given to customers as of yet.
Commenting on this, 9to5Mac states, “The new iPhone is generally thought to be the first-and-only phone to use the Nano-SIM standard that Apple spearheaded and took through regulatory approval.”
Earlier this year, Apple was embroiled in a battle with various smartphone manufacturers over a new standard for SIM cards. The brand had aimed for the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to recognise its proposed nano-SIM format as the next standard of SIM cards, as opposed to the traditional SIM cards and micro-SIM cards; the latter is now being adopted not only by Apple devices, but also by Motorola and Nokia. After facing stiff competition, Apple's proposed standard for new SIM cards has been approved.
In July, a report by BGR had surfaced which stated, “It’s been rumored that the new iPhone will feature an even smaller SIM card than what’s used now, and we can confirm that the new iPhone will feature these tiny SIM cards called nano-SIMs. Multiple carrier sources have exclusively told BGR that Apple is supplying nano-SIM adapters so its carrier partners can test how nano-SIMs work on their networks in standard test devices before they are widely deployed when the new iPhone is introduced.”
While this comes as some great news for those looking to purchase the next generation device, one of the main highlighted features can also lie within the fact that it may feature a completely new design as opposed to the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Prior to the launch of the iPhone 4S, it was widely expected that Apple would launch a redesigned iPhone and there was a case leak as well that supported the claim. However, a report had surfaced earlier this year claiming that Apple has shelved the plans to launch a redesigned iPhone with 4G connections due to the problematic connection of Verizon’s 4G LTE networks which caused the delay.
As for the design of the upcoming iPhone, there have been several casing leaks which suggest that Apple would implement a larger display on the iPhone 5. The display is believed to measure 4 inches diagonally but with the same width as the current generation iPhones. This would give it a screen resolution of 1136 x 640. Other major changes include the relocation of the headphone jack from the top to the bottom, the redesigned speaker grille and the connector dock. If those leaked images are in fact the back and front plates of the iPhone 5, we can expect the front facing FaceTime camera to be moved above the earpiece to a centralised position rather than to the side, unlike the camera on the iPhone 4 and 4S.
