Qualcomm unveils quad-core processor for entry-level phones

Qualcomm has announced two more Snapdragon S4 Play family mobile processors with improved features for the entry-level smartphones.

Qualcomm has announced two new quad-core mobile processors meant specifically for the entry-level smartphones. The new quad-core Qualcomm mobile processors - MSM8225Q and MSM5625Q - belong to the Snapdragon S4 Play family.

The new Snapdragon S4 Play MSM8225Q has an integrated UMTS (GSM) modem while the MSM8625Q has integrated multimode (UMTS/CDMA) modem. These new processors are expected to be available in the first half of the next year and we can expect the smartphones with these processors by second half of next year.

Till now, only the high-end smartphones were blessed with quad-core mobile processors. However, Qualcomm plans to give the taste of the quad-core mobile processors to the mid-range devices. Qualcomm refers to these devices as the entry-level smartphones and as of now, there is no clarity on the ideal price of such entry-level smartphones.

The new Snapdragon S4 Play mobile processors are the upgraded variants of the existing quad-core processors of Qualcomm, namely MSM8255 and MSM8625.

The new MSM8225Q and MSM8625Q have higher memory bus bandwidth by supporting the LPDDR2 memory type. It also offers 720p HD videos recording and playback flawlessly. Besides that, both new S4 Play mobile processors offer Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi, and FM connectivity.

This means that by next year end, the 720p HD recording-playback will be de facto for the mid-range devices and will also offer bunch of other features currently limited for the high-end devices only.

It is only by the second half of the next year we shall get to see mid-range devices with quad-core mobile processors inside.
