At the IFA 2012 event, Sony made a big impact and launched a range of devices spanning from HDTV sets to smartphones. Out of the smartphones the brand unveiled, the Xperia T was the flagship phone. Alongside it, Sony announced the Xperia V and J as well. Sony has announced that the Xperia V comes with the unique sensor-on-lens touch screen technology putting the display of this handset on par with recently announced smartphones such as the LG Optimus G and Nokia Lumia 920.
As per the announcement by Sony, this technology adds the same benefits to a user as the in-cell and on-cell touch technologies, which means one will get better image quality and a true direct touch experience.
Sony explains the concept behind this technology, and claims that in the Sony Xperia V, the number of physical layers in the touch panel (handset stackup) is reduced, as the sensor layer is actually a part of the lens itself. The brand claims that this means that one will get better image quality, as there is no interference from the touch sensor component. There is one less layer of glass and one less layer of glue, compared with conventional touch panels. Sony states that typically, you will get less haze and about 5 percent better display luminance without those extra layers.
This also helps in reducing the thickness of the handset and Sony states that with the sensor-on-lens touch technology, the phone is also made lighter and thinner, as an extra glass layer has been removed. This technology also moves the image plane closer to a user and to this Sony claims which makes it feel like you are actually touching the image itself. With this direct touch experience, you will get less parallax issues compared to a conventional touch panel, as the image and the point of touch are closer together in the sensor-on-lens touch screen technology.
For those who are not in the know about the latest smartphones unveiled at the IFA 2012 event, here is a quick recap for you.
