Going has removed the Places app as part of its customary spring cleaning to streamline services.
Search giant Google has been on a roll to discontinue services that are no longer necessary or are not getting much response from users globally.
The latest on its hit list was the Google Places app for Android, a standalone application that helped people find nearby places of interest.
Google has removed the app from Google Play store and is taking down the Places Directory site along with it. The reason for the removal is that users can now find everything on Google Maps.
Meanwhile, Google's Picasa and Drive will also be consolidated over the next few months, so users of both the services will have 5 GB worth of combined storage free.
The 5 GB storage limit will now apply to all the files that are stored in the Google Drive application along with the images that users have saved on their Picasa account.
People utilising paid services and storage on these services do not have anything to worry about as the storage space that they have paid for will be available to them.
While Google is discontinuing certain services it is not just abruptly killing down the numbers. Most services that have been discontinued till now either have a better alternative or are not really required by users anymore, but what will Google sacrifice in its next cleaning session, we will have to wait and watch.
