HP has finally made the Open webOS 1.0 version available for further open-source development and porting on existing devices.
HP has released the first version of the Open webOS mobile operating system. The Open webOS 1.0 was previously known as HP webOS and originally developed by Palm. HP clarified that the first version of the Open webOS is ready and can be ported on different devices - desktop and embedded environments.
HP has announced that the HP webOS mobile operating system will opened up to the open source community. The objective is to open up the development of the webOS platform and make it flexible to be ported or installed on variety of devices.
As promised, HP has delivered the first functional version of the Open webOS mobile operating system. And over the weekend, webOS-ports.org developers managed to port it on Google Android 4.x OS running Galaxy Nexus smartphone.
The Open webOS comes with new Enyo 2, a JavaScript app framework, and will let the developers work porting the cross-platform applications to work on this platform. Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of The Linux Foundation, stated that, "By using the build framework for embedded Linux, the Yocto Project with OpenEmbedded-Core, Open webOS is poised to deliver an open source build environment that developers will thrive from. Open webOS continues to hit its milestones, and we expect the community around the project to continue to grow. All the right tools are in place."
The Open webOS can be ported on number of devices that allow installing open-source based Linux Kernel and the user interface. By early next year we can expect to see the first Open webOS based devices being formally unveiled for the masses.
