It claims to consume half the power than similar processors.
Following the foot-steps of Qualcomm, Nvidia and Samsung, ST-Ericsson has announced its new quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 based NovaThor L8580 mobile processor with Long Term Evolution modem built-in. The four cores of this chip can be clocked at 2.5 GHz and overall power consumption is as much as that of the other processors promising same performance.
ST-Ericsson had introduced its couple of dual-core mobile processors mostly with Sony Mobile smartphones. At the on-going Consumer Electronics Show 2013, Las Vegas, USA, the company announced its next generation quad-core NovaThor L8580 mobile processor made from the ARM Cortex-A9 mobile processor.
While most mobile processors announced at the CES 2013 comprise of the ARM Cortex-A15 processor design, ST-Ericsson plans to take a safer route with the Cortex-A9 for the sake of power management. The NovaThor L8580 has four cores clockable to up to 2.5 GHz while consuming only 0.6 volts. The quad-core mobile processor also integrates LTE modem promising up to 150 Mbps mobile data connectivity speeds.
The new NovaThor L8580 mobile processor also supports the usual options - GPS with GLONASS, Bluetooth, Near Field Communication, and other connectivity options. Imaging enthusiasts can record videos at 1080p HD resolution and play it back in full HD resolution at 60 frames per second.
This has been powered by the PowerVR SGX 544 graphics chip that also empowers the 3D gaming and image sensors up to 20 megapixels.
The ST-Ericsson NovaThor L8580 based smartphones can be expected to hit the markets sometime later this year, probably at the Mobile World Congress 2013 convention next month.
