This is big! Google has announced that Android boss Andy Rubin will be stepping down from the helm of Android and will be replaced by Sundar Pichai, who also currently heads Chrome and Apps for Google. Andy will remain at Google and is likely to be involved in other projects, but specifics are not available at the moment.
Andy Rubin was the co-founder of Android Inc., the company behind Android before Google acquired it in 2005. Andy joined Google with Android and has been a driving force behind it as it became the top selling mobile operating system globally.
We are still not sure about the reasons why Andu Rubin is leaving his position as Senior Vice President of Mobile and Digital Content at Google, but as per Google, Andy’s decided it’s time to hand over the reins and start a new chapter at Google. Chrome boss Sundar Pichai will now be leading Android.
According to information available on Wiki:
Sundar was brought up in Tamil Nadu. He passed with a B.Tech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He also holds an M.S. from Stanford University and an MBA from the Wharton School.
Pichai joined Google in 2004 where he led the product management and innovation efforts for a suite of Google’s client software products, including Google Chrome and Chrome OS, as well as being largely responsible for Google Drive.
Larry Page, CEO Google, wrote the following on Pichai and Android:
Going forward, Sundar Pichai will lead Android, in addition to his existing work with Chrome and Apps. Sundar has a talent for creating products that are technically excellent yet easy to use—and he loves a big bet. Take Chrome, for example. In 2008, people asked whether the world really needed another browser. Today Chrome has hundreds of millions of happy users and is growing fast thanks to its speed, simplicity and security. So while Andy’s a really hard act to follow, I know Sundar will do a tremendous job doubling down on Android as we work to push the ecosystem forward.
