Google has announced that it is closing Google Reader as part of latest spring cleaning.
The shutdown of Google Reader is not only big news for desktop users, but also for Android users. The impending demise of Google Reader also means the death of its official Android app.
“We launched Google Reader in 2005 in an effort to make it easy for people to discover and keep tabs on their favorite websites. While the product has a loyal following, over the years usage has declined. So, on July 1, 2013, we will retire Google Reader,” Urs Hölzle, SVP Technical Infrastructure and Google Fellow noted on Official Google blog.
There is still some time, but if you use Google Reader for Android or desktop, it is time to start looking for alternatives.
If you are planning to wait, you won’t even realise how soon July will appear and you will be jumping here and there in regret of losing all your RSS feeds. So, at least go to Google Takeout and export your feed details.
Why is Google doing this?
Apparently, the user-base of Google Reader is going down and company wants to spend its money at products that attract more users.
“There are two simple reasons for this: usage of Google Reader has declined, and as a company we’re pouring all of our energy into fewer products. We think that kind of focus will make for a better user experience,” Alan Green, Software Engineer, Google noted in a blog post on official Google Reader blog.
