Rumoured Amazon smartphone may be delayed: Report

Rumours are coming in from China that the alleged smartphone from Amazon might not be launched in second quarter of 2013 as earlier expected. The reports of an alleged Amazon smartphone have been circulating for a while now, and we are yet to see any concrete evidence of the same.

According to a report in Digitimes, Amazon’s manufacturing partner for this smartphone Foxconn has been facing some issues with the production.

Digitimes adds:

The production of Amazon’s much-fanfared smartphone is still under its engineering verification test (EVT) period due to issues related to its mobile platform, the sources indicated, adding that the development of the smartphone is being handled by FIH’s subsidiary Ensky Tech, which has been responsible for the production of Amazon’s e-book readers and tablets.
According to alleged Amazon smartphone roadmap, the smartphone was supposed to go in the mass production phase next quarter, but that does not seem to be happening now. There is no word right now, when will Ensky Tech be able to start the mass production of Amazon phone given the current issues with engineering verification test.

Amazon has been quite active in the hardware arena in the recent few years. Company entered in hardware with its Kindle e-readers, which were very successful, but with the arrival of tablets, company had to jump in the tablet market as well, because the tablets were eating e-reader segment.

Amazon has launched four tablets till date all powered by a custom version of operating system and are currently available in select countries only. Amazon relies on its own content ecosystem to generate profits, as all of the tablets have no or razor thin margin.

Reports have indicated that Amazon will also be announcing a new version of Kindle Fire tablet along with the rumours Amazon phone.
