Intel has announced that its newest family of processors, codenamed Haswell, will be available from June 3 in the US and June 4 in Taiwan. The initial set of Haswell processors is expected to comprise of quad-core CPUs for powering high-end laptops.
"In approximately 3,337,200,000,000,000 nanoseconds, Intel will reveal all there is to know about the highly anticipated 4th generation Intel Core processor family," Intel said in a statement.
More than raw performance, Haswell aims to address Ivy Bridge's power consumption issues. Intel states that Haswell is much more efficient with its power consumption, but we can't say how well it'll fare in the real world. The processor and integrated graphics in Haswell are purportedly more powerful than its predecessors, though.
The new processors can power a variety of new devices that earlier processors couldn't owing to their demands for power. It wouldn't be surprising to see some of the smaller notebooks powered by Haswell, thanks to the improved power efficiency. Apple may even want a piece of the pie, and might power its next-gen MacBooks with Intel's offering.
This development gives credence to rumours from last year about Haswell's launch date being pushed back to June. Historically, Intel has shipped its new processors in March or April, and Haswell's June launch is a new thing for the company.
