Thanks to large number of feature phone users and middle-class population, India has always been seen as huge emerging market for smartphones. Even Google, which along with Open Handset Alliance (OHA) manages Android, has realised that in the recent few months. The company is now reportedly planning to start a retail store chain in the country, which will primarily sell Android devices, to promote this operating system.
According to a report in Economic Times, these stores will be known as Android Nation. ET further notes that Google has partnered with Spice Global to run these stores, which are expected to begin functioning later this year.
A quick search revealed that India isn’t the first country to get Android Nation stores; Erafone along with Google has been running two Android Nation stores in Indonesia.
ET states that Indian capital New Delhi will be getting the first Android Nation store, which will be opened in Select Citiwalk Mall. These stores will not only be selling Android devices to the consumers but will also work as experience centres, where people will able to know more about Android, applications and even get help about their Android devices from trained crew at hand.
BK Modi, Chairman of Spice revealed to ET that Spice’s partnership with Google isn’t just limited to India and the company will also promote Android (read start Android Nation stores) in Middle-East, Thailand and Africa.
As per ET, after opening the first Android Nation stores, Spice will convert about 50 of their existing Hotspot retail stores in Android Nation stores to enable rapid expansion.
