Samsung today officially announced its Galaxy S4 zoom camera-phone. Packing a 16-megapixel sensor with 10x optical zoom lens, this is a first for a smartphone. There is no word on the release or pricing at this moment, which are likely to be revealed at June 20 press event.
According to a press release issued by the company, Samsung Galaxy S4 zoom supports optical image stabilization and comes with Xenon flash.
Samsung says that Galaxy S4 zoom’s ‘Zoom Ring’ can do a lot of things including the obvious zooming. “When you’re in the middle of a phone call and you see something you absolutely have to share, a quick twist of the Zoom Ring will activate the In-Call Photo Share feature, letting you capture and send an image directly via MMS to whoever you are talking to simply. For easy camera navigation, the Zoom Ring can be used to activate the Quick Launch and Shortcut features, giving you instant access to multiple camera modes including Auto, Gallery and Smart Mode with a simple twist,” Samsung noted.
In terms of the specifications, Samsung Galaxy S4 zoom packs a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, Android 4.2 and 2330 mAh battery. You can check out the full specifications later in the post.
Coming to the software customizations, Samsung has included some really interesting tweaks including something called Photo Suggest, which apparently connects you to huge libraries of images taken by other photographers, to help you create the best possible shots. The feature can even suggest you a location, which according to it will be the perfect vantage point for your image. As we are yet to see it in action, we can’t really say, how much of it is going to be really useful. Samsung has a habit of flooding its phones with features, most of which are rarely used by the consumers.
“As communication continues to become increasingly visual in nature, people wish to capture and share their moments in the highest quality possible, but often do not have the space or inclination to carry a dedicated camera for this purpose. The GALAXY S4 zoom changes this forever, combining the industry leading functionality and connectivity of the GALAXY S4 with the high quality photographic experience you’d expect from a compact camera,” said JK Shin, President and CEO, Head of IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics.
In related news, Samsung is also expected to announce its Galaxy Camera successor at the June 20 press event, which will come be a mirror-less camera.
