Motorola & Verizon announce new Droid smartphones

Verizon and Motorola have taken the wraps off the new Droid-series smartphones at a press event today. The new line-up includes Droid Mini, Droid Ultra and Droid Maxx, same as we had seen in the flurry of leaks days ago.

Coming to the new devices, the new Droid smartphones comes with Motorola’s new X8 mobile computing system that basically integrates two CPU cores for application processing, 4 cores for graphics, one for contextual computing and one for natural language processing.

Not many technical details about each device are available right now, but we will list out everything that we know currently and will update the post if anything new pops up.

Droid Ultra: Android 4.2, 5-inch 720p display, 10MP rear camera with f2.4 lens, 7.2mm thick, 3D pattern on the back made of Kevlar, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 2130 mAh battery.

Droid Maxx: Android 4.2, 5-inch 720p display, 8.5mm thin body, Gorilla Glass, Unibody design, 48 hours of battery backup with 3500 mAh battery, 2GB of RAM, 10MP rear camera, 32GB of storage.

Droid Mini: 4.3-inch 720p display, Android 4.2, 16GB of storage, 2GB of RAM, and 10MP rear camera.

New software features:

Along with all the hardware details that we talked about just now, the new Droid smartphones also come with software customisations like touchless control for hands free operation, active display to light up only a select portion of the display to show notifications and quick capture to open camera app by just flicking your phone. Droid Zap is also a new feature being introduced in the new Droid phone, using Droid ZAP you can share photos to anyone with the new Droid phones within 300 feet with a two-finger swipe gesture.

Availability & Pricing:

According to Verizon, Droid Mini costs $99; Droid Ultra will go for $199 and Droid Maxx for $299 (all priced with two-year contracts). The smartphones are now available for pre-orders, while the actual shipments will begin on August 20.
