Acer has revealed that it plans to expand its Android and Chrome OS offerings in 2013 and 14, as the demand for Windows products slows.
According to a report in WSJ, Acer has stated that Android and Chrome OS are likely to contribute 10-12pc of the company’s revenues this year, which is further expected to increase to 30pc as the company launches more products based on these two platforms.
“Android is very popular in smartphones and dominant in tablets…I also see a new market there for Chromebooks,” Acer President Jim Wang told investors in a conference call.
While Android’s current contribution to Acer revenues in unclear, Chromebooks apparently made close to 3pc of the company’s shipments.
Acer does not seems to very happy with the current state of Windows OS and the rise in the demand of smartphones and tablets hasn’t helped either.
“For the PC industry, I haven’t seen light at the end of the tunnel,” Wang said. “First, we have to sustain our market share and protect our bottom line…and by doing tablets and smartphones right, we can be prepared for the day after tomorrow.”
There is no word on which new Android and Chrome OS products are going to be announced by the company, but IFA trade fair is likely to put some light on the upcoming devices.
