Microsoft Office Mobile for Android now available

Needs Office 365 subscription

Microsoft has announced the availability of its Office Mobile for Android application in Google Play. The current release of the Office Mobile is limited to USA Android users, however the company promises to roll out the application in 117 more markets over the next several weeks.

One major drawback of Microsoft Office Mobile app is the requirement of Office 365 subscription. So, if you don’t have an Office 365 account, this app is worthless to you.

“Office Mobile is the official companion to Microsoft Office. Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents look great on your phone, thanks to support for charts, animations, SmartArt Graphics, and shapes. When you make edits or add comments to a document, the formatting and layout remain intact. When you return to your PC or Mac, your document looks like it should,” notes Microsoft’s Julia White in a blog post.

Microsoft has only released the phone optimised version of Office Mobile for Android users and wants users to go for Office 365 web apps on tablets, so any hope for a tablet specific version is just a hope right now.

In terms of the functionality, this app allows you basic viewing and editing of Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. There are no fancy features available. You can read more about the functionalities of Office Mobile for Android in this blog post on Microsoft Office blog by Guy Gilbert.
