Intel details Atom Z3000 ‘Bay Trail’ processors, coming in Android tablets this year

Intel today formally announced the launch of new Intel Atom Z3000 processor series (Bay Trail) for tablets. Based on next-generation 22nm Silvermont architecture, the new processors reportedly bring 2x CPU and 3x GPU performance improvements over Clover Trail processors.

According to Intel, we can expect to see Android tablets or hybrids from manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Lenovo and Toshiba in the fourth quarter of this year. Intel notes that Bay Trail powered tablets will sell for as low as $199.

“What we have delivered with our Bay Trail platform is an incredibly powerful SoC that delivers outstanding performance, long battery life, and a great experience for the way people use these devices today. It’s an incredible leap forward,” said Hermann Eul, corporate vice president and general manager of Intel’s Mobile and Communications Group.

As a part of Bay Trail series of processors, both quad-core and dual-core options will be available.  The new processors also use the same Intel HD graphics that are present in desktop and laptop chips, with support for DirectX 11, OpenGL ES 3.0, HDMI 1.4, DP 1.2, eDP 1.3 and displays with up to 2560x1600p resolution.
