Android 4.4 Kitkat to focus on low-cost smartphones & wearables: Report

A report by Amir Efrati of JessicaLessin.com suggests Google’s upcoming Android 4.4 KitKat will be focusing on low-cost smartphones and wearable devices. Amir, who reportedly saw a confidential Google marketing document detailing the changes in KitKat, notes that Google wants Android 4.4 to work well on not only the high-end devices like Galaxy S4, Nexus 5 & HTC One but also on low-end smartphones.

Traditionally, we have seen that low-end smartphones are often powered by older Android versions as the newer iterations of the operating system demand more resources, which are simply not present in an entry-level device. This should change with KitKat, which will reportedly work just fine on phones or tablets with at least 512MB of RAM.

Coming to wearable devices support, Android 4.4 is said to be bringing support for more sensors like geomagnetic rotation vector, step detector and step counter, which will help the operating system be friendlier with a wearable device.

“There is another potential benefit to Android from supporting these kinds of sensors: Google will be able to tell how far someone walked based on the steps they took. That could come in handy as Google tries to map more indoor locations such as malls and airports, where GPS and WiFi sensors don’t always do a good enough job of pinpointing exactly where a smartphone user is located,” Amir speculates in his report.

Here is a look at some other features, which are expected to be a part of Android 4.4:

Better support for Infrared blaster
Support for Bluetooth HID over GATT and Bluetooth Message Access Profile
Ability to emulate payment cards that use near-field communication (NFC)

Google shows off Glass redesign

Just a day after announcing the hardware upgrade for Project Glass, Google has revealed the updated hardware on Project Glass’ official Google+ page.

As we can see in two images that have been shared by Google, there don’t seem to be any huge changes. We can only see the new mono earbud, which plugs in the microUSB port present on the device and goes in the right ear. Other changes are not visible; we hope to see the search giant reveal them in detail in the coming weeks.

In related Google Glass news, a Glass explorer was fined for wearing Glass while driving in California, US, giving us a taste of the possible legal implications of using Glass. There is no clarity on Glass and the legal issues surrounding it right now, such issues are expected and will only lead to some sort of clarity before the device goes public.

Facebook details Messenger app update, plans to take on other messaging apps

Facebook’s Messenger app on your Android devices is soon going to get a major update, which will bring host of visual improvements and several under the hood changes as well as new features.

According to Facebook, the Messenger app on Android is no longer an iOS app visually ported to Android. The updated version of Messenger has been made for Android while keeping in the mind the Android design guidelines. There are many visual improvements, as you can see in the images embedded in this report.

In addition to the many visual improvements, the updated Messenger app will now allow users to send messages to other Messenger users without the need for them to be Facebook friends. There is a necessary requirement for this though; both the users need to have each other’s phone number in their address book.  Messenger will be verify your phone number at the first use after the update and scan your address book to add all the people who are in your address book and also have you in their address book even if they are not friends with you on Facebook.

Messenger app will also now clearly show, which of your contacts are live from Desktop or Messenger app. Facebook is also removing the earlier introduced SMS integration from Messenger app, which as per the company has not taken off.

The redesigned Messenger app is being tested with a random group of Android users since Tuesday and will be available to everyone “in the coming weeks.”

Facebook seems to have realized that there is no point in sitting on the sidelines while apps like Whatsapp, Line or Kik continue to rake in millions of mobile users with their simple messaging apps.

Google smartwatch in late-stage development: Report

Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google’s rumoured smartwatch is in late-stage development and the company is already in talks with Asian suppliers to start the mass production of the device, which could begin within months.

The report adds that Google smartwatch will run on Android (not surprising at all) and come with Google Now support. Interestingly, WSJ notes that Google has been working to lower the power consumption of its smartwatch, so that the consumers don’t have to charge the device again and again. There is no word on how much battery backup will it exactly provide.

Google seems to be pretty serious about its smartwatch as it has been listening to the feedback of the existing smartwatches and wants to address the two key issues – usefulness and battery life in its own smartwatch.

As none of the existing smartwatches, whether it is from Samsung, Sony or the likes of Pebble, have caught the fancy of the consumers, Google has a great chance to be a leader if it gets everything right. The company will still have to face a huge competition from Apple, which has also been secretly working on its own smartwatch.

Motorola introduces Project Ara, a modular smartphone hardware platform

Imagine a smartphone in which you could just pop-in or out parts, add a new camera or extra RAM or new application processor. Well, if Motorola is successful, your imagination might turn out to be real.

Motorola today unveiled Project Ara, its ambitious free and open-source modular smartphone hardware platform. With Ara, the company aims to make modular smartphones a reality.

“Led by Motorola’s Advanced Technology and Projects group, Project Ara is developing a free, open hardware platform for creating highly modular smartphones. We want to do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software: create a vibrant third-party developer ecosystem, lower the barriers to entry, increase the pace of innovation, and substantially compress development timelines,” Motorola noted in a blog post.

According to Motorola, a Project Ara device includes an endoskeleton (endo) and modules.  The endo is the structural frame that holds all the modules in place. A module can be anything, from a new application processor to a new display or keyboard, an extra battery, a pulse oximeter–or something not yet thought of.

Motorola has been working on Project Ara for over a year and will be releasing an alpha version of its Module Developer’s Kit (MDK) sometime this winter.  The company has also partnered with Phonebloks, which shares similar aim and it will be using Phonebloks community and their input during Ara’s development process.

Nexus 5 full specs confirmed via Canadian telco’s pre-registration page

Thanks to a faux pas by Canadian telecom operator Wind Mobile, we now have the confirmation that all the leaked Nexus 5 specifications are accurate.

The telecom operator accidentally opened the pre-registrations for Google Nexus 5 on its official Facebook Page yesterday. While the mistake was corrected soon, damage was already done. This registration page contained the official press-render and full specifications of the Nexus 4 successor.

There are no surprises and Nexus 5 indeed comes with a 4.95-inch full HD display with Gorilla Glass 3, 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM. You can check out the detailed specification below.

In another leak, images from a LG Canada warehouse have revealed that LG is ready with stocks of Nexus 5 and is just waiting for the official announcement to begin selling them. This would mean that Google will start sales of Nexus 5 immediately after the announcement. Even if there is a gap, it won’t be of more than two-three days. (via)

Xolo LT900 4G smartphone coming in Nov: Report

It said to be first launched in Bangaluru first, followed by other cities as and when telecom operators roll out their 4G services.

Xolo, which had entered the market with world's first Intel phone and was even first Indian manufacturer to bring a phone with Tegra 3 processor, is now reportedly set to announce a handset with 4G capability. As per the media reports, a handset called Xolo LT900 with 4G support is all set to be launched as soon as next month (November).

As expected, Xolo is to launch the phone in Bangaluru first where 4G services are available, courtesy Airtel, according to the report of BGR India. Xolo will then launch the phone in other areas after telecom operators roll out their 4G services there.

Meanwhile, GSMarena has claimed that Xolo LT900 will come with a 4.3 inch display HD IPS display with One Glass Solution, with 314 ppi pixel density. Beside, the phone is said to have Snapdragon S4 processor with 1.5 GHz clock speed, 8 megapixel rear camera with BSI sensor and dual LED flash.

Micromax to launch 4G LTE devices in December: Report

Looks like XOLO isn’t going to be the only home-grown smartphone vendor to release a 4G LTE smartphone this year. According to a report in The Economic Times, Micromax is also planning to launch a 4G LTE smartphone by December and it will support voice-over-LTE.

“We want to establish ourselves on LTE and offer products that are LTE ready by December, so that consumers would not need to change their handsets whenever voice over LTE becomes available, be it six months or eight months later,” Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma told ET in an interview.

There are no details available about this smartphone right now.

With several telecom operators including Reliance Jio, which has just got a unified license, set to introduce 4G LTE services in the country next year, the decision from Micromax to release 4G LTE devices does not seems all that surprising.

It is good to see smartphone vendors getting ready for the next-generation technology and as almost all telecom operators (apart from probably Videocon) are going to use TDD-LTE standard in India (countries like US & UK use FDD-LTE standard), which is not very common right now and a very limited number of smartphones with support for TDD-LTE are available. So it will be important for local smartphone vendors to pitch in and it will also be a great opportunity for them.

Nexus 5 leaks in White, rumoured to release on November 1

Another Google Nexus 5 press render has been leaked by evleaks today but with an interesting detail. As per the very credible evleaks, Nexus 5 would be announced on November 1, 2013. There is obviously no way to confirm the date but given evleaks’ past track record, we are inclined to believe.

Similar to the images that we saw in the white Nexus 5 retail box leak, the Nexus 5 white version won’t be entirely white as you can see. The front and sides of the phone are going to be black and only the back of the phone is going to be white. Also, the camera module will carry the black colour.

There is no word on whether the phone will be released in any other colour option but given the past Nexus smartphone releases, we are highly doubtful.

To remind you, Nexus 5 is expected to come with 4.95-inch full HD IPS display, 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16/32GB of storage, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 8MP rear camera with OIS and front camera. The phone will come with Android 4.4 KitKat on-board.

There isn’t much difference in the specifications of iBall Andi 4.5z and its predecessors but the company has included a slightly upgraded 1.3GHz dual-core processor and newer Android 4.2 version on Andi 4.5z.

Among other specifications, the smartphones comes with 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, 8MP rear camera, front camera, 4.5-inch qHD display and dual-SIM support.

Your Aadhaar card hasn’t reached you yet? Download e-Aadhaar

Around four years ago, the Indian government had announced the implementation of a unique identification number or Aadhaar card (something like the social security number in the US) for every citizen. Soon, registering and obtaining the Aadhaar card was on the agenda of almost every well-informed citizen. In fact, the government’s decision to make it a mandatory document in government schemes, banks, schools and so on had fuelled the urgency to obtain it quickly. The card still isn't mandatory, though, at least for now. Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the agency responsible for implementing the Aadhaar card, has several enrollment centres across the country, and the procedure is hassled with long queues to acquire the form. Along with the form, the resident will be assigned a specific day for enrolling. This day can be within the next week or even months away. You then have to go and submit the Aadhaar application form along with other required security checks.

To avoid all the hassle and with a view to make it convenient for residents, UIDAI has been improvising on its methods and has now gone all online for select states, namely, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. This means you can book an appointment for enrolling for Aadhaar online. This is a trial-based facility and may extend to other parts of the nation in the near future. Once the online appointment is fixed, an appointment slip will be generated with a token number and other details of the schedule. In case you cannot make it on the day of the appointment for whatsoever reason, UIDAI has also provided the facility to re-schedule or cancel the appointment that has been made previously. You can book an appointment by filling this form from here, and re-schedule or cancel it here.

It is mandatory to undergo the usual process of getting your photograph clicked through the webcam, fingers scanned and fill in all the essential details. Many who have done all of this and haven't yet received their Aadhaar card can simply download it online, provided they've managed to keep the acknowledgement receipt given at the enrollment centre safely. Moreover, the printed copy can be directly used as the "official card" without the need for any authoritative signature.

To download the e-Aaadhar, you need to go to the e-Aadhaar page and feed in your details, such as the EID number, date and time, along with Resident Name and your area pincode. It will then take you through a process, verifying your mobile number, and the last four digits of the mobile number will be displayed. If they are correct, click on "Yes", otherwise click "No". You will then be given a one-time password (OTP). It is also possible to change your mobile number in case it is incorrect. In the next field, you have to key in the password and obtain the link to download the electronic version of your Aadhaar card.

e-aadhar

Before you start with the procedure to download the e-Aadhar, there are some important points to be noted. Firstly, the e-Aadhaar card that you download is password protected. The file will ask for a password and you can key in your area pin code to access it.

  • If you see the “validity unknown” icon on the e-Aadhaar, follow the below mentioned procedure:
  • Right click on the “validity unknown” icon and then click on “Validate Signature”
  • You will now see a signature validation status window, click on “Signature Properties”
  • Under Signature Properties, click on “Show Certificate”
  • Verify that there is a certification path named “CCA India 2011”. This means CCA India is identified as the owner of the digital signature that has been used when signing the document
  • Mark the certification path named “CCA India 2011", then click the “Trust” tab followed by “Add to Trusted Identities”
  • Answer “Ok” to any security question that follows
  • Check (v) the field for “Use this certificate as a trusted root” and click “OK” twice to close this and the next window
  • Click “Validate Signature'” to execute the validation
  • Also, once “CCA India 2011” is identified as a Trusted Identity, any subsequent documents with digital signatures from CCA will be validated automatically when opened

Users can also contact UIDAI by writing to them at help@uidai.gov.in or via the toll free contact number 1-800-180-1947.

HTC looking to outsource smartphone production: Reports

Reports coming in from Wall Street Journal and Reuters suggest that HTC is planning to move some of its smartphone production to contract-manufacturers as seeks ways to save money.

The Taiwanese manufacturer, which reported its first quarterly loss in Q3, has been in talks with FIH Mobile and Wistron contract manufacturers to outsource smartphone production as the in-house production is becoming more expensive due to the lack of big volumes. According to Wall Street Journal, HTC has met actively with contract manufacturers in recent months as the management is looking at all options for a viable turnaround plan.

As per Reuters’ sources, HTC has halted at-least one of its four major manufacturing factories and was even thinking of selling the out-of-use production lines in China and Taiwan. While HTC has denied any factory sales plans, it won’t be surprising to see if it actually sells one or two of its production lines to bring in cash.

“HTC’s cash flow is not doing well. It has to do something soon to generate cash,” one of the sources with direct knowledge of the manufacturing sale plan told Reuters.
