LG Display has announced that it has begun the mass production of its flexible OED displays, which will used in the company’s smartphones set to be launched in the future.
“LG Display is launching a new era of flexible displays for smartphones with its industry-leading technology. The flexible display market is expected to grow quickly as this technology is expected to expand further into diverse applications including automotive displays, tablets and wearable devices,” said Sang Deog Yeo, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of LG Display.
This announcement from LG comes weeks after Samsung unveiled a similar flexible display, which is also expected to be used in an upcoming smartphone from the company. While, Samsung is planning to launch its curved display smartphone sometime this month, LG might take a little longer.
According to the press release issued by LG display today, the company hopes to launch first devices using the new display sometime in early-2014.
“Our goal is to take an early lead in the flexible display market by introducing new products with enhanced performance and differentiated designs next year,” the company noted in the press release.
There were some recent reports, which suggested a November launch for LG’s curved smartphone but the today’s announcement seems to be indicating otherwise.
Coming to the display specific details, the new flexible OLED panel is built on plastic substrates instead of glass and is just 0.44mm thin.
“By applying film-type encapsulation technology and attaching the protection film to the back of the panel, LG Display made the panel bendable and unbreakable,” the company added.
The company has also revealed that the flexible OLED display is vertically concave from top to bottom unlike a side-to-side concave display expected to be used by Samsung.
