OnePlus, Micromax settle legal dispute; One will continue to get Cyanogen OS updates

Although OnePlus One smartphone recently received the Android 5.0-based Cyanogen OS 12 update in India, it was unclear what happened of the OnePlus and Micromax legal dispute, which had put OnePlus One’s software future in jeopardy. Things were looking so bleak to OnePlus that it rushed to complete its Oxygen OS, which was earlier supposed to debut with OnePlus Two.

“The month of December last year was a momentous occasion for the OnePlus family. We launched our flagship phone, the “OnePlus One” much to the delight of our consumers here in India. And then we unexpectedly got hit by a legal snag! For reasons that were made public earlier, we had to take a legal recourse to protect our rights in light of the proceedings initiated by Micromax,” OnePlus on Friday wrote in a blog post.

Now, OnePlus has announced that they have settled the legal disputes with Micromax out of the court and with mutual consent, which means the One will continue to receive whatever future Cyanogen OS updates are released for the phone in India too.

While OnePlus One will get Cyanogen OS for the time-being, the overall partnership between OnePlus and Cyanogen Inc is over, as revealed by the Cyanogen CEO Kirt McMaster in a recent interview with Forbes. The OS maker is currently in talks with various other smartphone vendors in China to pre-load Cyanogen OS in their phones.
